Dear Members,
Half of 2017 has ticked over so quickly that another major event has concluded. The Australian Badminton Open (part of the BWF Metlife World Super Series for the past 4 years) wrapped up on a high with a 3-game mixed doubles final, satisfying the predominantly China and Indonesia supporters in the arena.
The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has set up a consultation process for a National Sports Plan. This is open to the public until 31 July 2017. Members are encouraged to contribute and share amongst others.
In other ASC news, Sporting Schools Term 3 program bookings are now open! Please remind schools to book all programs through the Sporting Schools online booking system. Members are asked to provide feedback to BA on a Sporting Schools Memorandum of Understanding for external deliverers. This is an important step toward improving collaboration and reporting with providers that are not currently affiliated to the State Association.
The ASC has also released two new resources to support sports in the development and delivery of quality sporting experiences and professional learning opportunities within the school environment. These are useful for sport administrators or coordinators looking to promote programs and resources in schools, as well as for course presenters looking to effectively engage its teaching audience. Did you know that 'Tic Toc' is a Shuttle Time activity? Shuttle Time has been a HUGE theme over the past 2 months. Whilst over 250 students experienced Shuttle Time at the Sudirman Cup, there were over 200 students at the Australian Badminton Open, and another 200+ students in Sydney gave Shuttle Time a go as a result of school clinics delivered in conjunction with the event.
Five people completed their Shuttle Time Tutor training in June and delivered a session to a group of 5-15 year old children in Sydney. Thanks to a BWF Photography Grant and parental consent, we now have a stock of quality images to use and promote the program in Australia. A bunch of these photos will be released on BA Facebook page - Members are also welcome to use these photos to market or profile Shuttle Time.
Para-Badminton is also picking up momentum. National Para-Badminton Coach Ian Bridge accompanied seven Australian players who competed at the Thailand Para-Badminton International in June. Luke Missen (VIC) secured a win in the SS6 Men’s Singles class. BWF have issued grants for female participation, which 3 of our players have been fortunate to receive. Five Australian players are confirmed to compete at the Japan Para-Badminton International in September. Further discussion and development in para-badminton is encouraged across States who have players keen to access a pathway within the sport. Contact Ian/I to find out how to educate and assist club administrators, other players, coaches and technical officials on providing access to para-badminton players.
For Members who have signed Sport Participation Agreements with BA, please remember to submit mid-year reports by 31 July, along with updated member registers. Badminton is very close to gaining the next ASC Participation Investment Categorisation of 15,000 full active members. This is a credit to everyone trying their best to deliver on positive initiatives toward member and participation growth in their region.
