Dear Members,
There's never a dull moment. While the performance-side of sports is focused on the Rio Olympics as we speak, the grassroots side of sports is undergoing transformation again.
Over the last 3 weeks, you may have received plenty of information and request for action on Sporting Schools. Many thanks to everyone who provided comment and feedback. 12 August is the final date for all Sporting Schools NSOs to upload their workforce model, coaching contacts, and product packages for a new online booking system. Badminton may have the opportunity to be part of a working group that tests the system before it is released for Term 4. With that said, remember we are still in Term 3 and there is plenty of demand for badminton across the country - how is your State/Territory tracking with Term 3 Demand?

Does your State/Territory Association use social media? Did you know that posting interesting videos and photos are the best ways to engage your members and the general community? People tend to click on videos and photos than articles, however articles are also important to provide some context and variation to your media content...just keep it brief! Using tags can also start a conversation with other parties that may become a potential supporter or future stakeholder. Please note, Badminton Australia recently updated its Twitter handle to @BadmintonAus.
Having taken the US by storm since its launch, and with Australian users also getting in on the act, Pokémon Go is being held up as an unlikely antidote to physical inactivity. The smartphone game, which uses augmented reality to send players out onto the streets to capture virtual Pokémon, was only released recently but has already racked up millions of downloads. The game took just four days to become more popular than Tinder and is on course to outstrip Twitter in terms of active daily users. However, one of the more unlikely outcomes of the wildly successful launch has been the impact on gamers’ health. Users have been swapping their sofas for their local parks as they head out in search of Pokémon to catch, with many taking to social media to marvel at their new-found levels of activity. Contact me if you would like to discuss ideas on holding unique activities that may appeal to new participants.
Do girls or females in your region need any excuse (encouragement!) to stay in badminton? #LikeAGirl campaign shows girls have reasons to play sport that extend far beyond physical fitness. Beyond building confidence, teaching teamwork, winning and losing, pushing them physically and mentally, sport can do something else - it can help girls get ahead. Sixty-one percent of female executives said sports contributed to their career success, according to a global study by Ernst & Young and ESPN.
Upcoming participation programs and events: ACT Badminton has a Shuttle Time Teacher course on 20 August; Badminton VIC is holding a Level 1 Advanced Course on 27-28 August.
Regards, Marianne Loh Participation Manager Badminton Australia
